Even my guess about a certain someone that Chiamaka seemed to be befriending and falling in love with was wrong! Not a single thing I guessed was correct. When I say that none of my guesses about who Aces was were right, I really do mean it. This portion of my review is a little spoilery, so tread carefully! This author is a master, and I genuinely cannot wait to see more mysteries or thrillers from her. Àbíké-Íyímídé managed to lead the reader through various clues and foreshadowing, take them to a conclusion that you wouldn’t have seen coming, and yet still made it a satisfying ending.Įvery single incident and named character, no matter how seemingly insignificant, factors in later on in the story. It could also be that everything is a red herring. It can be that the conclusion is correct, in which case the author needs to be able to leave that veritable trail of crumbs. In my opinion, one of the key things that make a thriller really – well, thrilling – is its ability to lead the audience to a conclusion. Àbíké-Íyímídé is a master at building suspense and providing pay-off. The revelations from Aces even end up threatening their admissions to Juilliard and Yale. Aces sends out texts that seem to be targeting Chiamaka and Devon specifically, revealing their secrets that stand to ruin their social standing at Niveus. However, both are on the road to a good future in Juilliard and Yale, thanks to Niveus Academy.Īll of that is put into jeopardy with the arrival of a mysterious Gossip Girl-esque figure named Aces. Devon is an outcast from the “wrong side of the tracks”. The two of them are as different as can be. With heart-pounding suspense and relevant social commentary comes a high-octane thriller from debut author Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé.Content Warnings: Anti-Blackness, gaslighting, death, murder, blackmail, stalking, public outing, physical violence, drug use, underage alcohol consumption, use of racist slurs, talk of suicideĪce of Spades is the story of two Black students – Chiamaka and Devon – in the exclusive Niveus Academy which is composed entirely of white students and teachers.
